Uvalde CISD's Chronic Absenteeism Reached 47.4% in 2022-23

Uvalde CISD^↗ reported 1,731 chronically absent students out of an attendance denominator of 3,651 in 2022-23. That produced a chronic absenteeism rate of 47.4%.

Texas reported a statewide rate of 20.3% that year. Uvalde's rate was 27.1 percentage points higher.

Three consecutive increases after 2019-20

Uvalde's rate did not rise every year in the available series. It fell from 25.8% in 2018-19 to 15.8% in 2019-20, then increased in each of the next three reported years: 35.4% in 2020-21, 41.9% in 2021-22, and 47.4% in 2022-23.

The statewide rate declined by 5.4 points in 2022-23 while Uvalde's rate increased by 5.5 points. That widened the district-state difference by 10.9 points in one year.

District subgroup rates

The district's 2022-23 chronic absenteeism rate was 53.2% for special education students, 51.8% for at-risk students, and 51.5% for students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. The reported rates were 48.5% for Hispanic students, 36.9% for white students, and 34.1% for English learners.

The Texas data establishes the size and direction of the attendance changes. It does not establish why Uvalde's rate rose.
